Executive Summary

Fracking has transformed the energy industry in the United States and Canada. Shale rock rich in oil and gas is also present in France, Poland, Germany, China and elsewhere. However, in many countries fracking—short for hydraulic fracturing, which uses high-pressure water and chemicals to release fuel from rock—faces political and technical challenges.
